More than 35 African-American women, some running for the first time, have launched campaigns or re-election efforts in local and state races in the deep-red state of Alabama.
Democratic officials say it’s a record number in a single election cycle. In interviews with NBC News, the female candidates say they’ve been driven to hop on the campaign trail by several factors: Democrat Doug Jones’ stunning upset victory for the U.S. Senate in Alabama last year; antipathy toward President Donald Trump; the activism spurred by the #MeToo movement; and a desire to carry on Barack Obama’s legacy.
